History

CHOICES in Memphis: Founder and Staff circa 1974Choices, an independent, non-profit community health agency (formerly known as Memphis Center for Reproductive Health) was founded in 1974 by Priscilla Chism. The agency's mission is to empower individuals in the Mid-South community to make informed choices for and about their reproductive health. From the beginning the agency provided innovative services including free pregnancy testing, first trimester abortion care, and counseling that was specifically focused on the needs of the partners of abortion patients. In addition, Choices helped establish the first program in the United States to provide counseling, gynecology, and forensics services around the clock to victims of sexual assault.

Choices is now working to build a more comprehensive reproductive medical practice that provides a range of sexual and reproductive health services for more than 3,000 women, men, and teens each year. Located in a beautifully renovated facility on Poplar Avenue in Midtown, Choices offers a new model for community-based, comprehensive, reproductive health care.
