CHOICES, an independent, nonprofit community health agency (formerly known as Memphis Center for Reproductive Health) was founded in 1974 by Priscilla Chism. CHOICES’ mission is to empower individuals in the Mid-South community to make informed choices for and about their reproductive health. From the beginning, the agency provided innovative services including free pregnancy testing, first-trimester abortion care, and counseling that was specifically focused on the needs of the partners of abortion patients. In addition, CHOICES helped establish the first program in the United States to provide counseling, gynecology, and forensics services around the clock to victims of sexual assault.
CHOICES now provides a full spectrum reproductive health practice with a range of services for more than 4,000 women, men, LGBTQ+ folks, and teens each year. Located in a brand new, state-of-the-art health and birth center on Poplar Avenue in Midtown, CHOICES offers a new model for community-based, comprehensive reproductive health care.
With the opening of our new reproductive health and birth center in September 2020, CHOICES became the first nonprofit health care provider in the country to offer both birth services and abortion care under one roof.
